Jet lag

Jet lag is a strange beast. You're always aware of it's presence but don't pay much attention until it quietly stalks you like prey.

Stage one: the bombardment
One minute you're going about your day and suddenly a yawn betrays your location. You try to ignore it, "surely it was just a random yawn," but you have been compromised. Then comes another and another as if mortar fire was upon. The bombardment has begun.

Stage two: all out ground assault
The attacks intensify, as now the eyes join the siege. First they start to water, almost weep. You become acutely aware of a fire that slowly starts from the rear and quickly consumes the entire eye almost at once. Automatic fire suppression systems go to work immediately, quickly containing the inferno by lowering the eyelids. You fight to manually overcome the auto systems and regain control of your eyes, but you realize that it is only a matter of time.

Stage three: defeat
As battles are waged throughout, the attackers are seeming to gain the upper hand. And then it happens...the command and control center is lost. The simplest tasks become challenging. Basic arithmetic becomes calculus and speech becomes incoherent babble. You have put up a good fight but the attacker was just too strong to repel. The beast now tightens its bite and you know resistance now is futile. Defeat has come swiftly.

You make your way upstairs to bed, pull the covers over and are asleep before your head hits the pillow. In the distance a church bell strikes twelve times ... It's noon.
